The Third Sunday after Trinity
The homily teaches that pride is the original and ever-present sin of humanity, while humility is the antidote that allows us to receive God's grace. Using Satan's rebellion, Adam and Eve's temptation, and Peter's denial of Christ as examples, the preacher shows how pride causes people to exalt themselves and live independently of God. Christians are instead called to acknowledge their weakness and need for God's mercy, following the example of the humble tax collector and, above all, Jesus Christ, who humbled himself by becoming obedient unto death on the cross. The homily concludes that Christians should continually resist pride and cultivate humility by depending on God and serving others, remembering that “God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.”
