The Third Sunday in Advent
This homily reflects on the Third Sunday in Advent which marks a joyful midpoint in the season of preparation. Advent looks both backward to Christ’s first coming and forward to His return in glory. The Church lives between these two advents and prepares through God’s appointed gifts. The Gospel presents John the Baptist as God’s messenger who prepared the way for Christ by calling Israel to repentance and pointing to Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. John joined word and sacrament through preaching and baptism. The Epistle teaches that ministers today continue this same work by proclaiming repentance and administering the sacraments. Through Scripture Baptism and the Eucharist God prepares His people to meet Christ. Advent calls every believer to hear God’s Word repent of sin and receive His forgiveness so they may stand ready at the Lord’s return.
