The First Sunday in Lent

Feb 22, 2026    The Rt. Rev Dr. Charles Camlin

This sermon examines Christ’s forty days of fasting and temptation as a decisive moment in His saving mission. Jesus entered the wilderness to confront the devil at the root of humanity’s fall. The preacher contrasts Adam in Eden with Christ in the wilderness. Adam had abundance yet distrusted God and fell into temptation. Christ faced hunger and weakness yet trusted the Father and resisted every temptation. As the second Adam, He corrected what the first Adam corrupted. By overcoming the devil, Jesus broke his grip on humanity and opened the way for our freedom. Hebrews teaches that because Christ suffered temptation, He now helps those who face it. Through baptism, believers share in His victory and gain strength to resist evil. Lent calls Christians to engage in this lifelong resistance, trusting that Christ will lead them into final victory over Satan.
