The Fourth Sunday in Lent

Mar 15, 2026    The Rt. Rev Dr. Charles Camlin

This sermon reflects on the Fourth Sunday in Lent often called Mothering Sunday. Drawing from St. Paul’s teaching about the Jerusalem above, the preacher explains why Christians call the Church their mother. First, the Church gives spiritual birth through baptism, where believers receive new life by the Holy Spirit and enter God’s family. Second, the Church teaches her children through Scripture catechesis and lifelong instruction in the faith. Third, the Church nourishes believers through the Holy Eucharist, the bread of life that strengthens them for their journey with Christ. The feeding of the five thousand points toward this sacred meal that Christ entrusted to His apostles. The sermon urges Christians to honor love and remain close to their spiritual mother who gives birth teaches and feeds them until they reach their heavenly home.
