Septuagesima Sunday

Feb 1, 2026    The Most Rev. Dr. Ray Sutton

The sermon begins with a story about back surgery. The doctor corrected the problem but warned that only ongoing exercise could keep the back strong. The preacher applies that lesson to the spiritual life. Just as the body needs training, the soul needs spiritual discipline. On Septuagesima Sunday, three Sundays before Lent, the Church calls believers to begin spiritual training. St. Paul compares the Christian life to a race. Athletes practice self control and discipline to win a prize. In the same way, Christians must train for godliness. Spiritual disciplines include prayer, Scripture reading, silence, fasting, generosity, worship, service, and fellowship. Some practices involve abstinence such as solitude and fasting. Others involve engagement such as study and celebration. These disciplines build holy habits and strengthen the soul. Pre Lent and Lent give eight weeks to rebuild spiritual strength and grow into the likeness of Christ.
