The Thirteenth Sunday after Trinity
Sep 14, 2025  •  The Rt. Rev Dr. Charles Camlin
This homily reflects on the true purpose of God’s law. Too often, like the Pharisees, we treat the law as a checklist to earn righteousness. But as St. Paul reminds the Galatians, the law was never meant to replace God’s promise—it was given to reveal our sin and to drive us to Christ. St. Augustine captures it well: “The law was given that grace might be sought; grace was given that the law might be fulfilled.” The law humbles us, showing our need for mercy. Grace then empowers us to walk in holiness, not by our own strength but by God’s Spirit. Thus, the law becomes not a burden, but a mirror leading us to Christ and a guide for living in His grace.
